For both electricity and gas, Italy ranks among the most costly countries in Europe: with an average consumption of 2,700 kWh, electricity expenses totaled €444 in the first half of 2025. Only Germany (€518), Belgium (€482), and Denmark (€470) reported greater costs. However, bills in France, Austria, and Spain are significantly lower, while in Hungary they do not surpass €130, which is 71% less than in Italy. Taxes and charges constitute 25% of the utility cost in Italy, representing a decrease from 38% in 2019 and falling below the European average of 28%. The average six-monthly gas cost is €928, 8% higher than the European average of €855. Italy is the seventh most costly country in the EU, following Sweden, the Netherlands, and Denmark.
