For the fourth year in a row, Italy is the most popular study abroad destination among US students. This information is provided by Eduitalia, the consortium of Italian institutions dedicated to the internationalization of education, in a report shared with the Italian Embassy in Washington. The data originates from the Institute of International Education, the publisher of the Open Doors report, and is supported by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In 2023/24, 45,067 US students studied in Italy, accounting for 15.1% of all Americans who studied abroad (298,180 total). Spain and the United Kingdom follow, traditionally among the top choices, but this year falling to second and third place. Italy not only maintained its leadership position, but also had significant growth: +7.7% over the previous year, which equates to over 3,200 new students. According to Eduitalia, this success is the result of years of collaborative investment by Italian institutions, partner colleges and universities, and the Italian diplomatic and consular network in the United States. The latter is responsible for both cultural promotion and the management of study visas, which are required for people attending programs in Italy that last more than 90 days. According to forecasts, the number of American students in the country will increase again next year.
