On 28 November, Italian journalists will go on strike to denounce the lack of renewal of the national labor contract, which expired more than ten years ago. The union's statement highlights that "the quality of information is declining", while "publishers have not capitalized on the revenue opportunities presented by digital transformation" and have instead chosen to intervene by "reducing labor costs". According to the National Press Federation, staff reductions, the extended implementation of crisis measures, early retirements, and contractual freezes have "depleted the news content", thereby affecting pluralism and citizens' right to be informed. Therefore, the union asserts that the strike seeks to highlight the necessity of a new agreement that addresses the erosion of purchasing power and promotes the recruitment of young professionals into newsrooms, while also ensuring more stable working conditions for collaborators and correspondents, "who are predominantly employed on a temporary basis". The strike will be preceded by a demonstration in Rome on November 27. The FNSI reaffirms that the initiative "has no political motivation" and seeks to reaffirm that high-quality journalism is only achievable through the protection and fair compensation of journalists.
