Polling stations opened yesterday morning at 7:00 a.m. for the regional council elections in Campania, Puglia, and Veneto, with approximately 13 million electors anticipated to participate. Polls closed at 11:00 p.m., reopened this morning at 7:00 a.m., and are scheduled to close again at 3:00 p.m. today to commence the vote count in a highly anticipated political election. This follows the recent local elections, in which the center-right won in the Marche and Calabria regions, while the center-left secured wins in Tuscany. Campania has the largest number of voters—5 million—who will choose governorship candidates for former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Roberto Fico (M5S), Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Edmondo Cirielli (FdI), Giuliano Granato of the Campania Popolare list, Stefano Bandecchi, Mayor of Terni of the Forza del Popolo list, and Nicola Campanile of the PER list. Nearly 4 million people will vote in Puglia, with candidates including Antonio Decaro, a Democratic Party MEP; Luigi Lobuono, former president of the Fiera del Levante (Levante Fair) for the center-right; Sabino Mangano, representing the Civic Alliance for Puglia; and Ada Donno (Italian Communist Party, Potere al Popolo and Risorgimento Socialista). A highly anticipated test is also underway in Veneto, with over 4 million voters, where the candidate for governor is Lega MP Alberto Stefani, Matteo Salvini’s right-hand man and the unconventional choice of outgoing President Luca Zaia, who is heading the list in all provinces; the former Democratic Party mayor of Treviso, Giovanni Manildo; Marco Rizzo representing Sovereign Popular Democracy; Riccardo Szumski of Resistere Veneto; and Fabio Bui of Popolari per il Veneto.
