One in every three Italian women has been the victim of physical or sexual violence at some point in her life, and the perpetrators of rape and abuse are almost always partners. This is based on the Istat "Women's Safety" poll. According to the National Institute of Statistics, 6.4 million women aged 16 to 75 (31.9%) have experienced at least one instance of physical or sexual violence in their lives: 18.8% reported physical violence and 23.4% sexual violence, with 5.7% reporting rape or attempted rape. Relatives, friends, colleagues, or acquaintances were the perpetrators of 26.5% of the physical or sexual violence reported. The study also contains experiences that were never reported to the police, thus exposing the hidden reality. The data for younger age groups is particularly concerning: the proportion of women aged 16 to 25 who report having had at least one physical or sexual assault in the previous five years has risen from 28.4% in 2014 to 37.6% in 2025. When it comes to sexual assault, the increase among very young women is much more pronounced: from 17.7% to 30.8%. Almost doubled. The poll is still incomplete, as data on foreign women is absent.
