A tribute to the commitment of U.S. political leader Robert Francis Kennedy to social justice and civil rights. The Ministry of Enterprises and Poste Italiane have issued a stamp dedicated to him on the centenary of his birth. “It is the first time in the history of Italian philately that an American personality is featured on a stamp in Italy", said Federico Moro, secretary-general of Robert Kennedy Human Rights The stamp displays a close-up of Robert Francis Kennedy, who, as Attorney General during his brother John Fitzgerald Kennedy's presidency, made a significant contribution to the legislative process that resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was brutally murdered in 1968, five years after his brother, John Fitzgerald. The stamp is part of the "Social Values" thematic series and was printed by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato. Photographer Harry Benson provided the photo of Kennedy. In addition to the stamp issue commemorating Robert Francis Kennedy's centenary, a seminar was organized at Rome's Center for American Studies.
