People aged 65 and up in Italy have gradually increased their political and social participation. According to data provided by Istat, in 2023, the highest proportion of individuals participating in at least one political activity was among the 65-74 age group (64.5%), although the most notable increase since 2003 was observed among those over 75 (+8.1%). This has resulted in increased political engagement among older individuals, surpassing the average participation rate of the general population, contrary to the trend observed two decades ago. Furthermore, individuals over the age of 75 today have played a role in the social and political movements of the past century, sustaining, even in advanced age, a commitment that now more prominently leans toward the internet (the use of which as a source of political information has quadrupled among this demographic between 2012 and 2023). Furthermore, among those over 64, political participation is linked to increased involvement in volunteer activities (+1.7 percentage points since 2003). The same pattern is evident in social engagement across recreational, cultural, civic, and sporting activities, which has increased exclusively among older adults, particularly those aged 65-74, who, partly due to enhanced lifestyles, are now more active than in the past across all sectors of the public domain.
