At its auction in New York on February 5, 2026, Christie's will showcase a "recently uncovered, exceptionally rare drawing" attributed to Michelangelo. The little sheet (13.5 by 11.5 cm), signed "Michelangelo Bona Roti" and dated 1511-1512, likely to be a preparatory work for the Sistine Chapel ceiling. It will be listed for sale with a price range of $1.5 to $2 million. The subject has been identified as a study for the right foot of the Libyan Sibyl, which appears in the great Vatican cycle. The work was owned by a European family since at least the 18th century. The current owner, a resident of the West Coast of the United States who prefers to remain anonymous, had always known it to be in his grandmother's home, without knowledge of its creator. This drawing is an essential addition to the graphic documentation of Michelangelo's work. He created thousands of drawings, but just roughly 600 survive.
