In 2025, the number of Italians who identify themselves as readers of print, ebook, and audiobooks is predicted to rise to 76% of the population aged 15-74, or three out of four Italians, up from 73% in 2024. This is based on data from the AIE Observatory, the Italian Publishers Association, gathered by Pepe Research. The figure also includes people who have read just one book, such as comics, guides, or manuals. However, half of readers read a single book every four months. During the initial nine months of the year, sales of books in physical bookstores increased, accounting for 55.5% of the trade market, while online sales declined to 40.2% and large-scale retail trade to 4.4%. A mixed trend among genres: growth in Italian fiction (up 3%) and foreign fiction (up 0.1%) continued, while children's and young adult publishing recovered after a small decrease in 2024. All other genres decreased: general nonfiction (down 3.3%), manuals (down 4.7%), comics (down 5%), and specialized nonfiction (down 10.9%). Among the top-selling titles, Swiss author Joël Dicker's "The Very Catastrophic Visit to the Zoo" (La nave di Teseo) holds the leading position, followed by Pope Francis's autobiography, Spera (Mondadori).
