Secondary substations play a crucial role in the energy grid, converting electricity from medium to low voltage before it reaches homes. Today, however, they are no longer seen as purely technical facilities. They are increasingly becoming part of the urban landscape, designed not only for performance, but also for visual harmony.
Enel has reimagined its substations to be more efficient, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing. Materials, colours and architectural elements are tailored to suit each environment, whether in historic city centres, rural areas or suburban districts, reducing visual impact and improving public perception.
The project has been recognised by ADI, which included it in the 2025 Design Index, the annual selection of Italy’s most outstanding design projects.
The new model, known as “Enel Box”, was developed through an international design challenge and created by designer Eugenio Bini. Modular and easy to install, it is built with durable and recyclable materials. Its steel structure and fibre-reinforced concrete panels ensure long-term performance, while dry assembly significantly reduces installation time and costs. Advanced internal cooling systems also make room for digital technologies, helping build a more resilient and intelligent power network.
The first installation took place in Pian Camuno, near Brescia, while a scale model was exhibited at the ADI Design Museum in Milan.
With more than 400,000 substations nationwide, Enel continues to invest in infrastructure that brings innovation, sustainability and design together, shaping a smarter energy future.
