Italian marble is an international symbol of quality. Foreign sales of marble, travertine, granite, and natural stone—both raw and finished—amounted to €2,178.5 million in 2024, up 5.8% from the previous year. Italy continues to lead the continent in finished stone material production and exports. The sector, which in 2021 comprised over 3,200 companies and more than 33,800 employees, is primarily concentrated in the district encompassing the provinces of La Spezia, Massa Carrara, and Lucca, an extraction basin worth about 540 million euros in production value. China is the largest buyer of blocks extracted in Italy, with €228.9 million (+27%) and a 50% share of the total. With $542 million in completed stone sales, the United States remains the primary market for Italian stone, with demand increasing steadily. However, the most shocking statistic comes from the Middle East: Saudi Arabia experienced a 37.2% growth, drawing focus to a region where Italian stone is preferred for prestigious projects, including mosques, skyscrapers, and culturally and architecturally significant monuments.
