With less than a month to go before Christmas, families have begun calculating expenses. How much will Italians spend this year on food, gifts, bills, decorations, hotels, trains, flights, and other expenses? Facile.it and the Consumerismo No Profit association have released the most recent numbers. It shows that €8.7 billion will be spent on Christmas gifts, with a per capita expenditure of €204. This marks an almost 20% decline from last year, with 3 million Italians projected to pay less due to higher other family expenses. Many gifts will be paid in installments. Lunches and dinners will cost €2.7 billion, a decrease from the €3.5 billion budget in 2024. Consumerismo No Profit focuses on the high cost of food (according to Istat data, prices climbed by around 25% between 2021 and 2025, with even more dramatic rises in other categories). Household budgets will also be significantly impacted by gas expenses; according to an analysis conducted by Facile.it, the average expenditure for home heating this year is projected to be 1,013 euros. While Italians will cut back on gifts and dinners this year, the only expense projected to increase is travel. According to an EMG survey conducted for Facile.it, 10 million Italians plan to spend at least one night away from home over the Christmas or New Year's holidays, with an average budget of 440 euros, a 31% rise from 2024. Total spending is likely to approach 5 billion euros, up from 3.9 billion last year.
