Trento is ranked top in Il Sole 24 Ore's annual quality of life survey in Italy. Il Sole 24 Ore releases this classification annually, which analyzes 90 indicators, including the cost of living, employment rate, air quality, safety, average income, and road accidents. This year, Bolzano is ranked second, with Udine in third. The ranking's 90 factors are classified into six main thematic categories: wealth and consumption; business and labor; environment and services; demographics, society, and health; justice and security; and culture and leisure. Looking exclusively at the main cities, there are improvements over last year's ranking: Bologna jumped five places, from ninth to fourth; Milan rose four places, from twelfth to eighth; and Rome ranked 46th but climbed 13 places year-on-year. Only Bari and Catania have experienced a decline in position, whereas Florence and Messina remain unchanged. Many large cities in the South are at the bottom of the rankings: Bari is 67th, Messina 91st, Catania 96th, Palermo 97th, Naples 104th, and Reggio Calabria is last for the second year in a row.
