According to a Ministry of Health assessment, alcohol is a public health threat in Italy. People are drinking more frequently between meals, binge drinking is on the rise among young people, casual consumption is on the rise, particularly among women, and alcohol-related emergency room visits continue to rise. According to the survey, eight million Italians are considered at-risk consumers. This silent army of 5.5 million men and 2.5 million women exemplifies how the issue has become structural. In 2023, 67.3% of the people aged 11 and up drank alcohol. However, the major shift pertains to its consumption methods: the conventional practice of daily glass is being replaced by more sporadic patterns that are increasingly challenging to identify. Occasional drinking, for example, has grown far more common, particularly among women. However, the area dedicated to young people causes the most concern. The chapter on young people is the most worrying: nearly half of those aged 11 to 24 consumed alcohol in the past year. Even more concerning is the rise in binge drinking, or the intake of a significant number of alcoholic beverages on a single occasion: 14.5% of young adults engage in this behavior, with males reaching 19%.
