When the University of Trento issued a call for applications on October 30th for ten positions to accommodate and teach students from conflict zones, no one expected what would happen three weeks later. By the application deadline of November 20th, approximately 16,000 applications had been received: an enormous quantity, equivalent to the entire university's student population. Now the University of Trento faces a difficult task: sifting through such a large number of applications and selecting only ten students. Approximately 50% of applications originate from Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank. The remaining 50% is distributed amongst students from different conflict areas around the world, such as Congo, Yemen, and Sudan. They come from various backgrounds, but they all have the same desire: to leave behind the horrors of war that have characterized their lives and begin a new life through study and education. Admitted students will receive a €7,200 scholarship, will not be required to pay for university courses, and will have their travel to Trento, residence permit processes, and national health service registration paid for.
