Every four years, the world of sports abandons records, standings, and rivalries in favor of a universal language: symbols and shared feelings. It is the moment when the Olympic Flame is lit, marking the formal start of the Games. On December 5, in Rome, the ceremony will be held in one of the most representative places of the Italian Republic: Piazza del Quirinale, seat of the Presidency. Here, President Sergio Mattarella will begin the torch’s journey—a gesture that in Italy carries strong institutional value but also speaks to a global audience that sees sport as common ground among different cultures. The torch will starti its journey from the renowned landmarks of the Italian capital. From then, it will travel almost 12,000 kilometers in 63 days, traversing through 110 provinces on the peninsula. The journey will conclude on January 26, 2026, at Cortina d'Ampezzo, an iconic resort in the Dolomites, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Winter Olympics. That edition was a watershed moment: it was the first Olympic Games aired on a big scale on television, presenting a new and dynamic image of Italy to homes all over the world. The Flame will travel to Milan, where the opening ceremony for the XXV Olympic Winter Games will be held on February 6 at the San Siro Stadium.
