More than a third of Serie A matches have been played (13 out of 38), and Fiorentina has not yet won a single one. On Sunday, they lost 2–0 against Atalanta, remaining last alongside Verona: it was their seventh league loss, the ninth of the season counting the Conference League. This is a bad omen: in Serie A history, no team has avoided relegation after failing to win any of its first 13 matches. The change of the head coach from Stefano Pioli to Paolo Vanoli appears to have had little impact: even in the match against Atalanta, the team showed no definitive playing identity, with numerous skilled players uncertain of their roles on the field and, most notably, seemingly overwhelmed by their inability to secure a victory thus far and the need to compete for objectives different from those initially envisioned at the start of the season. On Thursday, following the Conference League defeat, Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko, a highly experienced player who arrived in the summer after playing for Roma and Inter, simply stated, "We suck", while also urging fans to support the club at least during the game. It did not help.
