“To exercise justice, there is no need to take anyone’s life. True justice never takes life, but is always on the side of life". With these words, Marco Impagliazzo, president of the Community of Sant'Egidio, emphasized the importance of raising awareness against the death penalty in an era when violence appears to be on the rise. This commitment has been carried out for decades by the Community of Sant'Egidio, which organized the 15th International Meeting of Ministers of Justice—titled "No Justice Without Life"—held Monday at the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. Today, maintaining the campaign for the abolition of the death penalty or its international moratorium "remains of utmost importance to reaffirm the culture of life as a fundamental value and to promote the humanization of the world", explained the president of the Community of Sant'Egidio. While tremendous effort has been made in recent years to abolish the death penalty around the world, African countries have made particularly substantial achievements. “Therefore, we hope", Impagliazzo concluded, "that after Europe, the first continent without the death penalty, the next will be Africa". Laws supporting the families of victims are needed, he added, and it is necessary to help public opinion “choose a culture of life".
