Rome recorded the highest number of reported crimes in Italy in 2024, with 271,779 cases, followed by Milan with 226,860. When adjusted for population, the picture shifts: Milan leads with 69.9 crimes per thousand residents, while Rome ranks third at 64.3. These figures are part of the 59th Censis report on national security trends. The study also highlights an encouraging trend early in 2025. In the first half of the year, reported crimes fell by 7% in Rome and by 0.9% in Milan compared with the same period in 2024. Pickpocketing remains one of Rome’s major issues. In 2024, 33,468 cases were reported - nearly a quarter of all such incidents nationwide - averaging 92 per day. The report also draws attention to the rise in sexual violence. Milan recorded 691 cases in 2024, roughly 10% of the national total and up 67.3% compared to 2019. Rome registered 510 cases, an increase of 22.3%.
