The Labor Court of Milan has overturned the dismissal of a young usher at La Scala who, on May 4, broke the pre-concert silence by shouting “Free Palestine” during an event connected to the Asian Development Bank meeting and attended by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to the judges, her dismissal did not meet the legal requirements. As a result, the theater must pay her all monthly salaries between the date of dismissal and the conclusion of her contract, which is scheduled for September 30th, as well as cover legal fees. The worker's lawyer portrayed the decision as reaching beyond a specific case, emphasizing that an employee cannot be fired for expressing an opinion, even if it is sensational. He also noted that in other theater settings, similar gestures by famous artists have been met with far more leniency. The event that resulted in her firing occurred when the young woman briefly left her place to go to the first gallery and shout her slogan. The theatre found the behaviour incompatible with the role and the institutional framework of the evening, beginning disciplinary actions that eventually resulted in dismissal.
