There are bribes in exchange for false residence certificates to obtain Italian citizenship iure sanguinis or for fake death certificates. In other situations, bribes have assisted the awarding of healthcare contracts, garbage management rather than public works, building permit issuance, and school meal services. There are exchanges of favors for rigged university competitions. There are also investigations into political transactions and large-scale mafia-related ventures. In anticipation of International Anti-Corruption Day, the Libera Association has prepared a summary of the main corruption investigations in Italy that have been reported in the media during the current year. This photo depicts a frightening picture: the hidden and unrestrained spread of corruption in Italy. Throughout 2025, from Turin to Milan, from Bari to Palermo, from Genoa to Rome, passing through provincial cities like Latina, Prato, Avellino, and the Salerno area, a "bribe" alarm is going to be constantly ringing, with the involvement of a thousand administrators, politicians, officials, managers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and mafiosi in a wide range of corruption crimes. Libera identified 96 corruption and extortion investigations from press reports between January 1 and December 1, 2025, an average of eight each month (48 in 2024). Forty-nine prosecutors' offices across 16 Italian regions have been convened to examine this consistently pressing issue. Overall, 1,028 people (compared to 588 last year) have been investigated for crimes ranging from bribery for acts contrary to official duties to political-mafia vote-trading, from bid-rigging to extortion aggravated by the mafia method.
