Valerio Locatelli won the Rubik's Italian Championship final for the fifth year in a row, claiming the title of Rubik's National Champion 2025. Organized by Cubing Italy, acknowledged as the Regional Organization for Italy by the World Cube Association, and in collaboration with Spin Master, the creator of the original Rubik's Cube, the event took place at TreviglioFiera in the Bergamo region. Valerio Locatelli, 19, lives in Bracciano (Rome) and is in his first year at university in Pisa. When a family friend introduced him to the famous Rubik's Cube in 2017, he developed a strong interest in it. Valerio became intrigued and began practicing on his own, using YouTube training videos for guidance. This was his eighth appearance in the tournament and his fifth consecutive win in the "3x3x3" category. Valerio also won the one-handed 3x3x3 cube championship for the fifth year running. Over 250 participants from throughout Italy and internationally took part in the competition, including the final of the traditional 3x3x3 version, won by Valerio Locatelli, as well as numerous categories featuring cubes of various sizes and unconventional challenges, such as one-handed and blindfolded competitions. The big turnout at the Italian event reflects the trend in speedcubing, a sport in which players solve the cube at ever-increasing speeds. Since the 1980s, this sport has grown in popularity, with international competitions taking place all over the world. The first world championship dedicated to the Cube, the “World Rubik’s Cube Championship,” was held in 1982, and since then competitions organized by the nonprofit World Cube Association—of which Spin Master is an official partner—have continued to spread across all six continents.
