The first data center built within an active mine has opened in Trentino. In recent days, the fiber-optic line was installed. The mountain now houses a sort of condominium carved into its interior: 14 floors, 28 flights of stairs. An additional extension tube has already been excavated, enabling for rapid infrastructure growth once saturation is achieved. The infrastructure is more than 80% underground, which reduces land use, assures passive cooling, and enables highly energy-efficient, water-free operation. Ninety million square meters of exterior rock shield the structure from all dangers, including seismic, hydrogeological, electromagnetic, and even hostile drone strikes. And the temperature is preserved from ancient eras: 12 degrees Celsius. The voids left by the withdrawn building materials create an ideal natural environment that is also utilized to preserve roughly 2.5 million bottles of sparkling wine, 40 thousand tons of apples, and 1,200 varieties of Trentingrana cheese.
