Genoa is getting ready to host the 11th World Pesto Championship, scheduled for 21 March 2026 in the historic Salone del Maggior Consiglio at Palazzo Ducale. Registrations opened at midnight on 10 December, and as every year the competition will bring together one hundred participants from across the globe, including the 28 finalists who earned their place by winning qualifying rounds held in Italy, Europe and North America.
A panel of 30 judges will evaluate technique, rhythm and the fragrance of fresh basil. The morning will be dedicated to the elimination rounds, while the afternoon will crown the new World Pesto Champion and award the traditional prize for the competitor who travelled the farthest.
Around the main contest, Palazzo Ducale will host an extensive programme of events. The new literary competition Pesto to Read, in memory of journalist Pietro Cheli, will debut alongside the return of Pesto Comics, an exhibition of antique family mortars, guided visits to artisan workshops and the Pesto&Rolli cultural itinerary. Families will find dedicated activities as well, including a non-competitive children’s championship and the opening performance by the Lollipop Choir.
Talks, demonstrations and innovation-focused events will enrich the day, including the “Basil Odyssey” project developed with the Italian Institute of Technology and the 2026 official gadget: savoury basil biscuits named Pestelli Genovesi. The city will join the celebration with a special restaurant week and a contest for the best pesto-themed shop window. The grand finale will be the traditional Pesto Party on the evening of 21 March, curated by the chefs of Genova Gourmet.
