Artificial intelligence (AI) has invaded Italian publishing businesses. Three out of four publishers (75.3%) say they employ AI techniques. Among large publishers with annual revenues of more than €5 million, 96.2% use the tools. For publishers with sales of €1 to €5 million, the percentage falls to 75%. Among publishers utilizing AI tools, 67.1% report using them for the development of press office and communication materials, 67.1% for drafting paratexts and metadata, 50.7% for designing covers and illustrations, 49.3% for editing, proofreading, and translation tasks, 31.5% for administrative or operational functions, 21.9% for accessibility initiatives, and 19.2% for commercial activities such as sales forecasting and data analysis. 17.8% employ artificial intelligence to create new products and services, such as interactive educational software (50% of textbook publishers) and database-based software and services (33% of professional publishers).
