The Savigliano Hospital (Cuneo) in Piedmont and the Mestre Hospital in Veneto are the best hospitals in Italy, according to the ranking drawn up by the National Agency for Health Services (Agenas) and presented at the Ministry of Health. The analysis comprised 1,117 hospitals and included 218 indicators. The two hospitals mentioned achieved high results in all eight clinical areas tested (cardiocirculatory, neurological, respiratory, general surgery, oncology surgery, pregnancy and childbirth, musculoskeletal, and nephrology), while 15 other institutions excelled in six or seven. Those excelling in 7 areas are: Ospedale Maggiore di Lodi (Lombardy), Fondazione Poliambulanza (Lombardy), Ospedale Papa Giovanni XXIII (Lombardy), Humanitas Clinical Institute (Lombardy), Ospedale di Cittadella (Veneto), Ospedale di Fidenza (Emilia-Romagna), P.O. F. Lotti Pontedera (Tuscany). Those reaching very high levels in 6 clinical areas are: Ospedale Bolognini (Lombardy), Ospedale di Montebelluna (Veneto), Ospedale Bentivoglio (Emilia-Romagna) and Ospedale di Città di Castello (Umbria). Agenas officials noted that “hospitals with very high performance across all eight areas are not necessarily the best known or the largest. Fame does not always reflect the real level of performance".
