Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has elected to auction certain gifts received from international leaders over the past two years: artifacts originally presented as diplomatic gifts and now prepared for sale as collectible items. Since 2022, Meloni has accumulated, through subsequent visits, a total of 273 objects duly documented in her response to a parliamentary inquiry. These include a figurine of Javier Milei with his chainsaw turned into a pop icon; a silver bust of Gandhi; the gold statuette donated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi; the ceremonial scarf chosen by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama; Middle Eastern carpets; a precious vase received in Vietnam; and blue python-skin shoes with gold heels designed by Saudi stylist Norah Alhumaid. The government justified the decision to sell these objects by claiming that keeping, storing, and categorizing them would be prohibitively expensive. The government therefore turned to a Roman auction house. Expected proceeds could reach up to €800,000, net of the commission agreed with the auction house (5%, capped at €40,000).
