The share of Italians owning a home has reached 81.6%, the highest level recorded since 2012. This figure emerges from ISTAT surveys revised by Confedilizia and marks an increase of 2.8 percentage points compared to 2019, the last year before the pandemic. In a context of internal mobility affecting approximately 1.4 million people annually, this result is particularly significant. Those who move between cities or regions more frequently tend to prefer renting, yet the number of homeowners continues to grow. One of the factors contributing to the overall increase in homeownership is the aging population. The over-65 age group is growing and historically has a high percentage of homeowner families. By 2024, 90.7% of Italians over 65 will own a home, another historic high. The most significant growth in homeownership is observed in the suburbs of large cities, where many middle- and lower-middle-income families live.
