This is a "senseless act of violence." Pope Leo XIV thus condemned the "horrific attack" in Sydney that killed members of the Jewish community celebrating Hanukkah on Bondi Beach. Yesterday, during the audience with the donors of the Christmas tree and Nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square, he also appealed to put an end to all forms of “antisemitic violence". To the donors, he stated: "The Nativity scene and the Christmas tree are symbols of faith and hope. As we reflect on them in our homes, parishes, and public spaces, may the Lord revive within us the gift of peace and brotherhood. Let us pray for those who are suffering as a result of war and violence". In the afternoon, in fact, the traditional inauguration of the Nativity scene and the lighting of the Christmas tree took place in St. Peter’s Square.
