Italians' perception of the United States as an ally is wavering: until last year, an absolute majority recognized it as an ally (54%) and only a minority as an adversary (16%), today these two visions are much closer (40% allies, 20% adversaries, with the undecided percentage rising to 40%). This is the finding of a survey by ISPI, which finds that "the United States is no longer seen as a reliable ally, to the point that Washington is considered only slightly more reliable than Beijing. This is the inevitable reflection of the new Trump presidency, which in less than a year has called into question everything with the Europeans, from NATO to trade relations, from support for Ukraine to the shared defense of multilateralism and the rule of law." Russia, however, remains the world's main threat (with 31%, down 1% from the end of 2024), followed by the United States and Israel, both with 12%. Compared to last year, the situation in the Middle East is less important for Italians than the war in Ukraine and the overall economic scenario: the fear of a recession in Europe is, in fact, the primary concern for Italians looking ahead to 2026.
