The Italian theater sector recorded excellent results in 2024, with 153,000 performances (+4.5% over 2023) and 28.3 million spectators, an increase of 7.2%. And within the sector, which is experiencing organic growth — from ballet to revues and musicals to prose and puppet theater (puppets and marionettes), both in supply and demand—only circus and opera are bucking the trend, with attendance declining. Jazz emerges as the phenomenon of the year: 7,100 concerts (+6.9%) attracting 1.2 million spectators, an 18.6% increase in attendance. Prose theatre, on the other hand, is expected to be the most dynamic segment, with 95,000 performances in 2024 (a 4.9% increase over 2023) and 16.5 million spectators, an 8.6% increase—the second-best result in the theatre sector after ballet. Revenue reached €284 million (an increase of 13.2%), with average individual spending stable at €17 (an increase of 4%). Despite being inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the end of 2023, opera performances in 2024 remain largely stable, albeit with mixed results. The 2,880 performances recorded a 2.3% decrease compared to 2023, while the 2.13 million spectators recorded a modest decline (-0.8%). As for jazz (attendances up 18.6%), its success is driven by its affordable price (average €15.11) and the proliferation of summer festivals across the country, particularly vibrant in Umbria, Sardinia, Sicily, and Piedmont. Classical music attracted approximately 20,000 concerts, with 3.7 million spectators (+6.1%).
