Long-anticipated, following over 13 years of construction, the ribbon-cutting ceremony has finally taken place for the two new Metro C stations in the center of Rome: Colosseum and Porta Metronia. These are designated museum stations, intended to display the numerous archaeological discoveries recovered during their construction. The stations opened to the public and have been accessible to residents and tourists since yesterday afternoon. With the inauguration, the new stretch of the metro from the San Giovanni station to Via dei Fori Imperiali has come into operation. Despite the start of service, the Porta Metronia museum remains many months away from opening. The museum site—which includes a Roman-era barracks from the first half of the 2nd century AD, the Commander’s Domus and the centurion’s house—will remain closed and inaccessible to the public for now.
