In 2025, Italy is expected to see 390,000 new cancer cases, a figure that remains constant from 2024. However, the good news is that there have been 9% fewer deaths over the last decade, with the drop being considerably more pronounced in lung cancer (-24%) and colorectal cancer (-13%). These values outperform the European norm and lead into greater five-year survival rates. A significant challenge arises, however: in the Southern region, 15% of patients relocate for breast surgery, with this figure increasing to almost 50% of out-of-region procedures in Calabria. This is the conclusion of the Italian Medical Oncology Association's (AIOM) paper "Cancer Numbers in Italy 2025". A significant emerging concern is the phenomenon of financial toxicity, which refers to the economic burden associated with cancer.
