In Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, as in thirteen other Italian regions, land consumption is expected to exceed 5% of the total available area by the end of 2024. In contrast, Trentino-Alto Adige remains more virtuous. This snapshot comes from the latest edition of the Ispra report, produced by the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research. In Veneto alone, 729 additional hectares were converted to concrete last year – the highest figure in Italy – bringing the total to over 216,000 hectares, or 11.86% of the region’s total surface area (a higher percentage is observed only in Lombardy, at 12.22%). This comes despite the 2017 approval of Regional Law No. 14, which aims to limit urban development and protect land from paving, a goal that has proven difficult to achieve.
