Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino has surpassed the historic milestone of 50 million passengers in a single year for the first time. The record was reached just ahead of the Christmas holidays, a period during which Aeroporti di Roma expects to handle an additional two million travellers by 7 January, alongside 180,000 passengers at Rome Ciampino Airport. The achievement places Fiumicino firmly among the world’s leading hubs, following its inclusion in the Top 10 most connected airports globally by aviation analytics firm Cirium. The airport is set to close 2025 with more than 51 million passengers, marking an increase of over 4 per cent compared with the previous year. This growth has been driven by an extensive network of 240 destinations across 80 countries, supported by more than 100 airlines and over 30 new routes launched during the year. Long-haul traffic has been a key factor, with North America confirming its leading role at 4.7 million passengers. Seasonal peaks reached up to 40 daily departures, while traffic in November and December rose sharply compared to both 2024 and pre-pandemic levels. Asia also posted strong results, with passenger numbers up 16 per cent, boosted by rising demand for routes to South Korea, Japan and Bangladesh, as well as the return of the Hong Kong connection operated by Cathay Pacific.
