More and more Italians choose to drink tap water. Today, eight out of ten citizens do so, indicating a long-term shift in everyday behaviors and attitudes toward tap water. This information is based on the survey "Drinking Water Consumption in Italy", conducted by Open Mind Research on behalf of Aqua Italia, which examined the prevalence, frequency, and motivations for the consumption of potable water—both treated and untreated—both at home and outside the home. The results demonstrate an increasing trust in tap water: just 9.7% of respondents claimed they never drink tap water under any circumstances, a decrease from the 2021 study. This is an important indicator of a gradual reduction in resistance and increased awareness of the quality and safety of drinking water delivered in Italy. One of the primary reasons for consumption is its reduced cost as compared to bottled water, as well as a favorable perception of its taste and purity. These factors enhance the perception of tap water as a dependable, cost-effective, and appropriate resource for daily consumption, particularly when complemented by domestic treatment and purification systems. However, some people continue to consume tap water rarely or completely avoid it, owing to mistrust or long-standing habits. Even in this situation, the decrease in those who say they won't drink it "for any reason" implies a gradual but consistent overcoming of these resistances in favor of a more informed approach that is mindful of sustainability.
