President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella has granted pardons to five inmates convicted of different crimes, each case marked by distinct legal and personal histories. The decision, announced by the Quirinale, followed favourable opinions from judicial authorities and a case-by-case assessment of humanitarian and rehabilitative factors.
Among the beneficiaries is Franco Cioni, convicted of killing his terminally ill wife in an act committed amid profound despair. The pardon extinguished his remaining sentence, taking into account his health conditions, the forgiveness expressed by a family member of the victim and the exceptional human context of the crime.
Clemency was also granted to Alessandro Ciappei, sentenced to ten months for a fraud dating back to 2014. His remaining sentence was cancelled, citing the limited gravity of the offence, the time elapsed and his successful reintegration abroad. A full pardon was extended to Bardhyl Zeneli as well, convicted of breaching house arrest, a conduct that magistrates later deemed not to constitute a criminal offence.
In the case of Gabriele Spezzuti, who had already served a prison term for drug-related crimes, the pardon concerned the remaining fine, in light of his difficult economic situation and the absence of further offences. Finally, Abdelkarim Alla F. Hamad, serving a 30-year sentence for involvement in multiple homicides linked to migrant smuggling, received a partial pardon, reflecting his young age at the time of the crime, over a decade already spent in prison and a rehabilitation path recognised by prison authorities.
