Christmas 2025 is shaping up to be more generous for Italian households, with average spending expected to rise by nearly 5% compared to last year. According to a survey by Unimpresa’s Research Centre, based on a sample of 1,500 families, average Christmas expenditure will reach €964 per household, up €44 from 2024.
Growth is evident across all major spending areas. Christmas dinner remains central to family traditions, with average spending increasing to €157 per household (+4.8%). More families plan to spend more, while fewer expect to cut back. There is also a growing focus on quality, with higher spending on regional food products, artisanal desserts and Italian wines.
Gift budgets are also rising, albeit more moderately, reaching €227 per family (+3.2%). Online shopping continues to expand, now accounting for over 40% of purchases, while products linked to wellness, sustainability and craftsmanship perform strongly.
The strongest growth is in holiday travel. Average spending on Christmas vacations climbs to €580 per household (+5.5%), with a higher share of Italians planning to travel. Domestic destinations, particularly mountain resorts and historic villages, lead the trend, alongside spa breaks and short European trips. Even those staying home plan to allocate more resources to local activities, culture and dining.
Overall, the data point to a gradual but widespread recovery in consumer confidence, supported by stable prices, employment growth and a partial rebound in purchasing power.
