University mobility to Italy, financed by the EU's Erasmus programme, is increasing. This is expected to increase further in 2026, as London has decided to rejoin the program after withdrawing from it following Brexit, investing £570 million in the European student exchange program. In the past year, 40,204 European students selected Italy for their university studies or internships, reflecting a 5% rise. This positions Italy second, surpassed only by Spain, and ahead of Germany and France. This predilection for Italy is also evident in the number of students enrolling at specific universities. The European ranking of Erasmus students' favorite universities includes four Italian destinations: the University of Bologna (2,934 students), Sapienza University of Rome (2,168 students, fifth), the University of Padua (1,338, seventh), and the Polytechnic University of Milan (1,902, ninth). The number of Italian students studying abroad is likewise increasing, from 36,082 in 2024 to 40,405 in 2025. This is also due to an investment of €145,881,159, as opposed to the €131.2 million authorized in 2024.
