The illustrations for the new euro banknotes are currently being decided. Competing for inclusion are Leonardo da Vinci, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Maria Callas, as well as eagles and storks flying over river valleys and mountainous landscapes; the ultimate decision will be made in a few months. The European Central Bank's Governing Council will have to determine in the second half of 2026 which motifs will appear on future banknotes, replacing the current bridges, windows, and gateways—imaginary but indicative of many architectural styles. The ECB will select among sketches submitted by artists and designers from across Europe that are inspired by the Eurotower's two themes: icons of European culture and biodiversity, including rivers and birds. This spring, about forty pre-selected artists will compete in a semi-final of the competition, which will be judged by a panel of experts. The culture theme depicts iconic figures, while the reverse shows venues of art, knowledge, and sharing, such as museums, universities, and town squares. The one on nature, on the other hand, allocates Side B to the Union's principal institutions, from the Commission to the Court of Justice, and even the ECB itself. Before the final decision, which will be made by the Governing Council, the ECB will conduct a public survey open to all.
