Interviewed by Corriere della Sera, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the Italian Bishops' Conference, affirms that "peace between Russia and Ukraine must be equitable. However, peace is inherently just, and it often entails compromises that challenge principles and realities. This is a course of action that should have been steadfastly pursued three years ago, when the first genuine opportunity presented itself". The decisive impulse was given by Trump, after he had criticized both Europe and Zelensky. "What is your opinion of the US president?" the journalist questions. "His persistence," Zuppi responds, "has facilitated dialogue in the Middle East and Ukraine, opening opportunities that appeared inaccessible. Naturally, it is troubling that he renamed the Department of Defense to the Department of War, as this signifies a departure from the belief that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and a supranational authority. Such a shift would indeed transform the world. Regarding his policy, the U.S. Bishops’ Conference is right to oppose indiscriminate mass deportations and to demand the respect of immigrants’ dignity, as well as to judge unacceptable measures targeting families and children and cutting programs that protect God’s creation". The Church opposes rearmament, but shouldn’t Europe defend itself? Let's not conflate defense with rearmament. The European Union requires efficient, coordinated action as a prerequisite for establishing a European army. Rearmament should be proportional to genuine security threats. This endeavor demands courage and foresight. De Gasperi used to say: "united Europe is not born against nations, but against the nationalisms that destroyed them".
