Marin Jelenik, a thirty-six-year-old homeless man of Croatian origin, was arrested on Tuesday, January 6, in Desenzano del Garda (in the province of Brescia). He was wanted for the murder of train conductor Alessandro Ambrosio on Monday, January 5. The suspect, who has a criminal record for carrying a weapon, was apprehended in front of the Desenzano del Garda train station and his identity was confirmed using fingerprints. He was later transferred to Brescia's Police Headquarters. He reportedly told officers that he knew he was wanted but did not know exactly for what. The motive remains unclear. The Bologna Prosecutor's Office has currently charged him with murder, with two aggravating circumstances: having acted for base motives, and having committed the act inside or in the immediate vicinity of railway stations. According to preliminary investigations, Ambrosio was shot in the back without having the opportunity to defend himself. The 34-year-old train conductor was killed at the Bologna station after being stabbed in the abdomen in the employee parking lot on the west square. Based on the reconstruction so far of Jelenik’s movements, on Monday, January 5, he was reportedly removed several times from Bologna station, where in the morning he allegedly caused considerable disruption in the supermarket on platform one. After spending the night at a homeless shelter in Milan, he took a bus to Desenzano. The man had been served with an expulsion order requiring him to leave Italy within 10 days, a directive issued on December 23rd by the Prefect of Milan, following his apprehension in the Lombardy capital with a kitchen knife.
