Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has canceled all public events scheduled for January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, as well as all "leisurely, recreational, or sporting activities in public areas or open to the public" due to heavy rains that have caused flooding and other damage. The rule also requires the closing of cemeteries and prohibits access to green spaces, parks, gardens, and ancient residences. Since the evening of January 4th, the urban banks of the Tiber, where pedestrians are ordinarily permitted, have been closed. Gualtieri's ordinance also includes useful recommendations and guidelines for staying safe, such as avoiding underpasses, river banks, and other flood-prone areas; avoiding basements and extended periods on balconies; and avoiding being outside under trees or other structures that could collapse.
