At the port of Genoa, the Guardia di Finanza uncovered and confiscated nearly two and a half tons of high-purity cocaine, estimated to be valued at €1.5 billion, a figure anticipated to rise with street trafficking. Officers were not fooled by the attempt to hide the cocaine in 87 colored jute sacks covered with nylon nets, containing the drug packaged in 2,109 bricks. Everything was found in a container that had sailed from the Colombian port of Cartagena, considered the country’s largest. This very origin, combined with the fact that the container was ostensibly empty, raised suspicions, which were confirmed by the weight of the cargo and, consequently, by its contents once opened. According to investigating assumptions and considering the quantity, the drugs were bound not just to Italy, but also to other European countries. The Genoa Financial Police said that this is the greatest amount of drugs intercepted at the port: 2,380 kilograms, more than the 2,100 kilos recovered in 2018. International drug trafficking has prompted the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Finance Police) to open an investigation. Genoa and Gioia Tauro in Calabria are the Italian ports most closely monitored for drug trafficking from South America.
