From March 29 to November 22nd, Punta della Dogana in Venice will host a significant exhibition dedicated to North American artist Lorna Simpson, presented by the Pinault Collection in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and curated by Emma Lavigne. This initiative introduces to Europe, for the first time on such a wide scale, a comprehensive overview of Simpson's recent paintings, in addition to collages, videos, sculptures, and installations. Born in Brooklyn in 1960, during her formative travels in Italy, she identified the white dress as a repeating theme in her early work. Discovered in the mid-1980s for her pioneering approach to conceptual photography, Simpson has since dedicated herself primarily to painting as her most prolific area of exploration, driven by several key themes: the erosion and renewal of memory, the limitations of representation, and the instability of narratives. The Venetian exhibition spans over two decades of work, from some of the canvases created for his participation in the 2015 International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, curated by Okwui Enwezor, to the presentation of several unpublished works created especially for this exhibition.
