Poste Italiane is introducing innovative prototypes of electric cargo e-bikes into historic city centers, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and safety of mail and parcel delivery within restricted traffic zones. The initiative, which began in Puglia, attempts to combine technology, carbon reduction, and adaptation to new requirements for historic cities. The project is a collaboration between Poste Italiane, Italian Aluminum Technology, Pirelli, and the universities of Bergamo and Milan. The new three-wheeled electric e-bikes were created to satisfy delivery needs in cities with strict road traffic limitations. The cargo box can contain up to 700 liters and 100 kg, which exceeds the capacity of typical bicycles, and the three-wheel design assures stability even on uneven ground or in heavy traffic. Speed is limited to 25 km/h. Sensors, radar, and computing systems assist the driver during the route by recognizing potential hazards and monitoring tire condition and wear. The anti-lock braking system improves brake safety, while integrated photovoltaic panels enable energy regeneration that combines braking and sun energy. Poste Italiane maintains a fleet of approximately 29,000 low-emission vehicles, comprising over six thousand fully electric vehicles and thousands of hybrid vehicles. It is one of Europe's largest business fleets.
