Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni revealed during her press conference at the beginning of the year that the Council of Ministers has set March 22 and 23 as the dates for the referendum to approve the constitutional reform instituting judicial career separation. This referendum does not necessitate a quorum, indicating that the popular vote remains valid irrespective of voter turnout. This sets it apart from the abrogative referendum, which determines whether a law should be repealed and mandates a quorum of at least 50% plus one of eligible electors to participate in the vote. A single additional vote from either supporters or opponents of the reform will be sufficient to affirm or reject the proposed constitutional amendment. The confirmatory referendum is governed by Article 138 of the Constitution. The Meloni government’s reform amends the Constitution with the aim of separating the careers of prosecuting and judging magistrates.
