Condemnation of the repression of protests in Iran has united (almost) the entire Italian political spectrum. The Senate Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee adopted a bipartisan resolution supporting the Iranian people, with both the majority and opposition factions voting in favor. The Five Star Movement's representatives were the only ones who abstained. "We requested one straightforward measure: to explicitly state in writing our opposition to unilateral military interventions conducted outside the bounds of international law, which serve interests other than the liberation of numerous young individuals and Iranian citizens seeking to end tyranny. They refused. Consequently, we chose to abstain, although we agreed with the rest of the resolution; the omission of that particular clause is of fundamental importance to us", explains Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte. However, controversy erupted, and the abstention received criticism from all sides: "The abstention is unjustifiable, and fractures the broad alliance", said representatives of Brothers of Italy, Forza Italia, and Azione. Meanwhile, the Senate hosted Iranian activists, who issued a single appeal: “Do not leave our people alone".
