Carlotta Perego, also known as Cucina Botanica, is one of Italy's most well-known food bloggers. Her Instagram profile has 1.4 million followers, and her posts on vegan recipes and nutrition are viewed by tens of thousands of individuals daily. It was through Instagram, in some stories shared in recent days, that Carlotta revealed she had been the victim of identity theft. Her image was used without her permission in a deepfake video generated through artificial intelligence (AI) to promote supplements and weight-loss products. Carlotta Perego described how watching herself in a video she was entirely unaware of, and later discovering that her image had been used to endorse products that fundamentally contradict her principles, profoundly shocked her. As a result, she chose to report the event to the police. After all, what happened to her constitutes a criminal offense in every respect. Effective 10 October 2025, in Italy, the unlawful distribution of content produced or modified by artificial intelligence is subject to imprisonment ranging from one to five years.
