The word of the year among young Italians for 2025 is "chill". It was chosen by the Accademia della Crusca as part of an initiative that invited secondary school students, organizations, institutions, and figures from the worlds of culture and academia to vote for the most significant terms used by youth. Midway through the year, the most popular words included "amo", "aura", "bobbare", "bro", "broski", "cringe", "fra", "letsgoski", "rimasto", and "slay". Although the term is not entirely new—it has been used in youth discourse and on social media for at least four or five years—it has only lately gained popularity among the new Alpha and Zeta generations. The word has given rise to the verb "chillare", with the participle "chillato", which indicates a state of relaxation. In an age of speed and hyperactivity, "chill" asks us to calm down, enjoy the moment, and create places for real well-being. In addition to the winner, the 2025 edition featured three distinguished awards: one to a school in Florence for the phrase "essere cucinato" (being cooked), another to an association recognizing the linguistic creativity of gifted children, and a third to a high school in Acireale for the neologism "elevanza", a term that combines high standards and refined elegance.
